Charlie Phillips is a songwriter, singer, and instrumentalist whose melodic songs are crafted in pop, rock, folk, and blues stylings. As the youngest of six children growing up in the Philadelphia area, Charlie was subjected by his older siblings to diverse music ranging from Richard Wagner, to Frank Sinatra, to Joni Mitchell. Ultimately, it was the pop and rock music of the 60's and 70's - songs that blend melodic allure with lyrical resonance - that attracted Charlie as a kid.
With his transistor radio set to WFIL-AM tucked under his pillow at bedtime, Charlie began his fascination with song at an early age. He literally wore out the grooves of his brother’s 45 of “Mellow Yellow,” and absorbed the harmonies on “Abbey Road” with his ear glued to the left channel of the living room hi-fi speaker. With a love for melody and harmony, Charlie began writing songs in the early 1980s.
He honed his songwriting, arranging, producing, and instrumental skills laying down tracks on his 4-track reel–to–reel. He developed a knack for “constructing” songs, allowing the texture of each song to evolve through experimentation with instrumentation and vocal harmony. In 1999, Charlie’s approach to songwriting forever changed after attending a workshop facilitated by Jimmie Dale Gilmore at the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, New York. Among so many other transformations that continue to unfold as a result of this workshop, and perhaps most importantly to the listeners of this collection of recordings, Charlie began to “own” his songs and bring them out of his basement and to the public. Since the experience with Gilmore, Charlie makes it a practice to expand his writing through the kind of collaboration and creative exchange that happens at songwriting workshops. Meeting and melding his musical ideas with others whose experience of music is often quite divergent from his and learning from their self-expression helps him expand his craft. Charlie’s love of performing stems from the interplay that develops between his audience and him. He has played in a variety of bands, most recently gigging around the Philadelphia suburbs as one of the 2Cats. Now, as Charlie offers his own songs to the public during solo gigs, he finds that the audience is responding to his music as they do to old favorites. Charlie continues to explore many avenues. Paths that may appear divergent, whether come upon intentionally or otherwise, always seem to bring him closer to authenticity. Hence, the title of his debut album… “All Roads Lead To Home”.
