Performing traditional Cuban traditional dance music of the 1920's and 1930's, Conjunto 23 specializes in the classic “son oriental.” This “cuarteto de son” has entertained a variety of Latin American cultural organizations, elementary and secondary schools, universities, and dance clubs throughout the Northeastern United States. Conjunto 23 also performs a variety of contemporary Cuban music, including guaracha, conga, chachacha, and boleros.
The musicians include David Garlitz on Cuban tres and vocals, Jim Jordan on bass, Scott MacDonald on bongó, and Robin Moore on guitar, percussion, trumpet, and vocals. According to Moore, Conjunto 23 plays “what might be considered proto-salsa. It’s sort of the initial, rural, folk music of Eastern Cuba.”
